Privacy policy

We collect nothing.

That's the short version. The long version explains exactly what the apps, the browser extensions and this website do with your data, which is keep it on your PC.

Last updated: · Applies to Zenless 1.0

Who we are and what this covers

Zenless is an open-source project published at github.com/zenless-inc. “We” means the Zenless maintainers. This policy covers:

  • Zenless Download Manager (zenless-dm.exe)
  • Zenless Torrent (zenless-torrent.exe)
  • Zenless Setup (ZenlessSetup.exe) and its uninstaller
  • Zenless Browser Integration for Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera) and for Firefox
  • This website

What we collect

Nothing. Zenless has no servers, and none of the apps or extensions contain analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, advertising or accounts. They never send information about you, your computer or your downloads to us or to anyone else.

Because the code is open source, you don't have to take our word for it: every line is on GitHub.

The desktop apps

Network connections they make

Apart from update checks, the apps only connect where you tell them to:

  • Download Manager connects to the servers that host the files you download. If a download was handed over by the browser extension, the request includes what the website needs to allow it, such as the referring page, that site's cookies and your browser's user agent, exactly as your browser would have sent them.
  • Torrent connects to the trackers, DHT nodes and peers of the torrents you add. This is how BitTorrent works: your IP address is visible to other peers and to trackers of any torrent you download or seed.
  • Setup installs the components you choose and records nothing about your system or your choices. Where anything is fetched from GitHub (for example a release file), that request is handled by GitHub under GitHub's privacy statement.
  • Update checks. Download Manager and Torrent ask GitHub (api.github.com) for their latest release when they start and every few hours while they run, and download new versions from GitHub Releases. The Download Manager also checks the browser extensions' releases when Zenless Setup installed them. These requests identify only the app and its version (in the user agent), and GitHub handles them under its privacy statement. You can turn automatic checks off in Settings → About → Updates.

The local API

So the browser extensions can hand over downloads, the Download Manager listens on 127.0.0.1:6812 and Torrent on 127.0.0.1:6813. These ports are only reachable from your own computer, never from your network or the internet. Requests coming from ordinary web pages are rejected: only browser extensions and local programs are accepted, and requests that point at files on your disk are only accepted from local programs. A website therefore can't use Zenless to start downloads on your PC.

Clipboard watch

When clipboard watch is on, the Download Manager checks the clipboard on your PC for copied download links so it can offer to download them. Clipboard contents are not stored unless you add the link, and are never sent anywhere.

Data stored on your computer

Everything the apps remember is stored locally, in plain files you can open, back up or delete:

WhatWhereContains
Appearance%APPDATA%\Zenless\appearance.json, themes\Active theme, text size, rounding, density and your custom themes, shared by all Zenless apps.
Download Manager%APPDATA%\Zenless\DownloadManager\Settings and your download list: links, file names, folders and progress, plus the request details a download needs in order to resume.
Torrent%APPDATA%\Zenless\Torrent\Settings and session state: which torrents you added, which files you selected, and their progress.
Programs%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Zenless\The installed apps, the unpacked extension and the uninstaller.
RegistryYour user hive (HKCU) onlyAutostart entries and magnet: / .torrent associations, if you turn them on.

None of this ever leaves your computer. Uninstalling removes the programs and the entries Zenless Setup created. You can delete the folders above at any time to remove everything else.

The browser extensions

What they look at

To do their job, the extensions work with the pages you visit, inside your browser: they notice downloads you start, read links on a page when you ask to download all of them, and spot video and audio files that a page loads (the media sniffer). This happens locally and isn't recorded.

What they send, and where

Only when you hand a download over to Zenless, or when capture is on and a matching download starts, an extension sends these details to the Zenless app on your own computer (127.0.0.1) and nowhere else:

  • the file's URL, suggested file name, size and type;
  • the address and title of the page it came from;
  • the cookies and user agent needed for the site to allow the download;
  • for torrents, the magnet link or the .torrent file.

The app then downloads the file directly from the website, as your browser would have. The extensions also ask the local apps whether they're running, to show their status, and which version of the extension the Download Manager has installed, so they can update themselves.

Firefox itself checks https://zenless-suite.vercel.app/firefox/updates.json about once a day for a newer signed version of the Firefox add-on. That is Firefox's normal add-on update check, and the host logs it like any other request to this website (see below).

Permissions

The permissions your browser shows when you install an extension are used only for the purposes above. They cover access to downloads (to capture them), to cookies (so downloads that need you to be logged in still work in Zenless), to page content (to find links and media) and to storage (for the extension's own settings, such as which file types to capture).

Extension settings

Extension settings are kept in your browser's own extension storage. They contain preferences only, never your browsing history.

This website

  • No cookies, analytics or trackers. There are no third-party scripts on this site.
  • Your theme choice is saved in your browser's local storage so the site remembers it. It never leaves your device, and clearing your site data removes it.
  • Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser connects to fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com, and Google receives your IP address and browser details. See Google's privacy policy.
  • Hosting is provided by Vercel, which processes standard request logs (such as IP address and user agent) to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. See Vercel's privacy policy.
  • Downloads are served by GitHub Releases, under GitHub's privacy statement.

Third parties

We don't sell, share or rent any data, because we don't have any. The only third parties involved are the ones you choose to interact with: the websites you download from, the peers and trackers of the torrents you use, and the services named in the website section above.

Zenless is not directed at children and, since it collects nothing, holds no information about anyone, children included.
